a salute to artisanship

the design industry, like many others, has become so digital and disconnected from the handiwork of the craftsmen and women… after all, they are the foundations of our careers. photographer john spinks documents the production process of clothing brand- albam at a garment factory in the uk. the raw, unrefined resulting images celebrate the honesty of the artisanship that still moves our high-tech world. the unfettered aesthetics that spinks depicts, make for a refreshing perusal and will be sure to solicit your appreciation.

is this affection simply nostalgic or do these unsung heroes warrant recognition for the preservation of timeworn skills?

you know how to reach us…

how low can your logo?

it’s a mad dash to create the worst logo possible. it’s something i never thought i’d see, because as designers we are critical of every visual element we encounter. often, we find the biggest soapbox to shout from, letting our condemnation ring loud and clear. professionally, we do our best to assuage the visual clutter that litters our lives; now you have the opportunity to contribute. at how low can your logo? you can submit your worst attempt and possibly be recognized for your aesthetic garbage. may the best of the worst win.

print, the current situation

with technology ever encroaching on print’s territory and the economy swimming with the fishes, magazines and periodicals are facing these challenges in one of two ways. A. saying “uncle,” closing up shop and washing their hands of the business or B. embracing the online community and chalking it up to change like covet garden. when done well, bravos are in order, they capture the functionality of their tree-killing, disposable landfill filler predecessors without their intrinsic hazards. but to me they still lack the tactile experience, and the charm of glossy, carefully curated photographs. are we going to be forced to choose?

so how do you feel about the evolution that has been thrust upon this industry… are you an A or B? or maybe you’re like me and still find yourself drawn and quartered in between the two.

the influence of info graphics

info graphics are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in our daily encounters with information. with this mode of communication becoming the medium of choice by everyone from the national government to movie promos it is becoming increasingly clear who are the forerunners of the information pioneers. a great info graphic can consolidate a cumbersome concept into a simplified tangible form that makes the topic accessible to the greatest number of people.

land/sea can put a familiar topic like the recent bp gulf oil spill into context. yes, they call it the deepwater horizon well, but how deep is it and why did it take them so darn long to stop it? perhaps this graphic will give you some perspective and illustrate the power of the info graphic.

with newspapers facing revolutionary changes in their industry, communicating to their audience is even more critical to their survival than ever before. this clip of steven duenes, graphics director of the new york times provides a brief window into the newspaper’s utilization of this visual communication.

and, if you have a little more time and are intrigued by info graphics, here is another video featuring many of the industry’s leading info graphic specialists and their views on data visualization of today and tomorrow.

do you have an info graphic that really made some sense out of an abundance of information? where do you see data visualization fitting into the larger picture of visual communication?

Letterpress

do i have your attention now? this machine changed human communication forever, and while the printing industry has evolved, the letterpress has lingered. the heidelberg and presses of that sort retain the ability to evoke passion and emotion that is seldom seen these days. why do we feel so passionate about letterpress? it could be the connection to the process and the appreciation for the craftsmanship deeply embedded in the final product. the beauty in the simplicity of design required by the medium and the tactility produced by the press culminates in an experience that transcends the capabilities of any modern press. studio on fire is a practitioner of this beloved craft with exceptionally exquisite results. included is a video of a master at work.

why are you drawn to letterpress?
